We interupt…

Filed under: Just Me — dawn @ 12:35 am

this mild weather to return to the regularily scheduled winter.

For the last two weeks we have enjoyed rather balmy 40F weather, during the day and temps in the 30F’s at night. But starting tomorrow (New Years Eve) we have 3 storms scheduled. I hope that all the partiers take it easy and drive safely…

Saturday: Increasing clouds with light snow developing by dark. The snow may be mixed with rain in southeastern Connecticut. High temperature in the 30s. Wind shifting NE.
New Year’s Eve: Snow likely. Any mix of rain & snow will turn to snow even in coastal New London County. Low temperature 25-30. 2″-4″ of accumulation likely statewide except 1″-3″ in southern Middlesex & New London Counties.
New Year’s Day (Sunday): Any snow ending during the morning, remaining cloudy. High temperature 32-37.
Monday: Mostly cloudy with a wintry mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain & rain developing late in the day & continuing at night. High temperature in the 30s, dropping to near 30 at night.
Tuesday: Any mixed precipitation ending as snow showers. High temperature in the 30s.

And there is a storm in the long range forcast for Thursday…

Wait a Second?

Filed under: General, Just Me — dawn @ 4:04 am

It seems we will all be hanging onto 2005 for a second longer than we thought…

“For those of you counting the seconds until 2006, add one.

The world’s top timekeepers will insert an extra second—or leap second—just before midnight in coordinated universal time (UTC) on New Year’s Eve. (That’s the same as 6:59:59 p.m. eastern time on December 31.) UTC is determined by atomic clocks and is five hours ahead of eastern time.

Earth’s rotation is ever so slightly slowing down, but atomic clocks remain unwaveringly consistent. The extra second will allow Earth to stay in sync with the ultraprecise clocks, which mark time based on the vibration of atoms.

The planet’s slowing is mostly due to the friction of tides raised by the gravitational pull of the sun and the moon. In fact, a day is now about two-thousandths of a second longer than it was a couple centuries ago, scientists say.

To keep today’s atomic clocks synchronized with time as measured by Earth’s rotation, timekeepers insert a leap second whenever the difference between the two clocks exceeds nine-tenths of a second. ”

So for those of us, who would really like to get this year over with…we will have to wait another second.

Vacation week

Filed under: Just Me — dawn @ 7:25 pm

I would love to say that we have been so busy that I havent had time to post here, but that would not be the truth. The kids have been out of school since last Friday and we really havent done a whole lot. I have gotten alot of sleep, and the kids have been playing with their Christmas presents…some computer games and a Nintendo. I think that this has been the quietest vacation week, as my son isnt running about like a wild man….though when he plays the Nintendo he stands and is constantly moving.

Tomorrow morning, Blackie is going to the groomers, and then the rest of the day I have nothing to do. If the weather is nice, the kids can go out to play. It has been in the 40’s F all week and isnt expected to change to soon.

Oh well…I guess it is nap-time

We will be home for Christmas

Filed under: Just Me — dawn @ 9:00 pm

…due to a forcast that calls for runny noses and huricane force coughs, my family will be evacuating to the nearest blankets for some rest untill the cold front passes. This will undoubtedly disrupt many of our holiday plans, but with the weather looking like this it is safer than letting cold front pass to other locations. Looks like we will be spending our Christmas at home. I hope that everyone has a Merry Christmas!

Peanuts

Filed under: Just Me — dawn @ 2:09 am

This past evening, I opened a bag of nuts, and started eating peanuts when I remembered that my Dad, on one of our last times together, had taken me out to eat at a resturant where there were peanuts at all the tables…

So may little things, hold so many memories

Crochet Scarves

Filed under: Crochet and Crafts — dawn @ 1:14 am

I recently finished two projects. Actually one was finished while I was in PA for my Dads funeral and the other just after I got home, but I forgot about them for a little while. As I left home I forgot to grab my scarf, I was just a tad distracted, and when I arrived in NY I had alot of sitting time. I decided that I would keep my fingers moving and make myself a useful scarf in the process.

This scarf actually has a little hood built into it…my loverly daughter is modeling it for me…

I got this idea from a throw that I saw while in NY. While working on it, to make a throw, I thought that it might also look nice as a scarf.

Both of these scarfs have been added to the Crochet Blankets of the Craft Shoppe.
